What is a lab-grown diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond created in a controlled environment rather than formed underground. It's made of the same carbon atoms in the same crystal lattice, rates the same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and has the same refractive index — the property that produces a diamond's fire and brilliance.
Lab-grown diamonds are not diamond simulants. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that resemble a diamond. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond.
How are lab-grown diamonds made?
A diamond forms when carbon is subjected to the right conditions — immense pressure and heat. In the earth, that happens deep underground over an enormous span of time. In a lab, the same conditions are recreated in a controlled chamber, and it happens in weeks.
The useful comparison is ice. A glacier takes thousands of years to form. Your freezer takes a few hours. Nobody argues that one of them isn't really ice.
Diamond works the same way. Same carbon, same conditions, same result — the only variable is how long it took and where it happened.
The rough is then cut and polished by the same cutters, on the same equipment, to the same standards applied to mined rough.
Can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a mined one?
Not by eye — and not with a loupe. Two stones of equal grade are visually identical because there is nothing visible to distinguish them.
Identification requires specialized expensive laboratory equipment that detects differences in growth patterns and trace elements.
Why are mined diamonds so expensive?
Two reasons, and only one of them is about the stone.
Getting them out of the ground is enormously expensive. Diamond deposits sit in remote parts of the world, and reaching them means building mines, roads, power, and housing where none existed. Enormous quantities of ore are processed for a small yield of gem-quality rough. All of that cost is real, and all of it is in the price.
The rest is supply control, and it set prices artificially high. For most of the twentieth century, De Beers controlled the great majority of the world's rough diamond supply and released it deliberately — holding back stock to keep prices high and rising. Diamonds are not especially rare. They were made to behave as though they were.
De Beers also created the modern engagement ring convention through advertising, including the idea that you should spend a set number of months' salary on one. That wasn't tradition. That was a campaign.
Their grip has loosened — competitors entered the market, regulators pushed back, and no single company holds that position today. But the price expectations built over decades didn't loosen with it.
None of that makes a mined diamond a bad purchase. It does mean the price reflects more than the material — and that a stone of identical composition, grown rather than found, can cost dramatically less without being any lesser.
How do you verify a lab-grown diamond?
Every stone should come with an independent grading report and a report number you can verify yourself.
Ask any seller for the report number before purchase, then look it up on the grading laboratory's website. Confirm that carat weight, color, clarity, cut, and measurements match what you were shown. A seller who won't provide the report number in advance is telling you something important.
